This is a great spot to grab a bite, a drink, a 3-course meal, or a late night eat.  In short, There’s always a reason to end up here.  Sidenote: The fare is worth the climb, as Umami sits atop a 3-story building on the corner of 38th and Butler Street.

Here’s what I recommend:

Chirashi which is like a loaded poke bowl, comes served with salmon, tuna, yellowtail, scallop, striped bass, ikura, tako w/ quail egg, shiso, & nikiri sauce.  As a quick fix with a drink, I always go for either the Bacon-wrapped quail egg Skewer,  or an order of Pork Gyoza for the table.  This one’s always a hit– and everyone’s familiar with it– Pan fried pork & cabbage pot stickers.   Karaage, is another fool-proof move. Japanese fried chicken, 36 hour gravy– enough said.  Chawanmushi is a little bit more outside of my comfort zone as far as ordering goes, but i’m so happy I tried it.  This savory egg custard, is served with mushroom dashi, kabocha squash, scallion, and barrel aged soy.  In the category labeled “Happy Endings”  The fried ice cream lives up to its title.
